handsome trick

Blackhawks 7 – Avalanche 2: Mountain of Madness

Well, that was certainly fun.

After 20 minutes of play tonight you pretty much knew where this was going. Three goals, one on the man advantage, and Patrick Sharp was just one goal away from a hattie on his birthday. He completed the trick barely 30 seconds into the 2nd period and the Hawks never let up the remainder of the way. Fuck, Michal Handzus scored a goal tonight because Patrick Kane put up a point in his 13th straight. Whitewashing. By the end, I’d run out of words to describe the thing.

Unexpectedly Expected: Blackhawks 3 – Kings 1

Jon Toews recalling what it was like to be placed on a line with #GorillaSalad last season (photo credit: Jonathan Daniel, NHL.com)

Now, admittedly I did not watch last night’s contest against the Leafs due to a prior engagement (it’s still on my DVR, I might watch it just to make sure it really happened) but the type of play tonight at the United Center is what I would have expected against that Toronto team, not these Kings. Conversely, I would not have been surprised if the 7-3 drubbing came against Los Angeles. But in a complete role reversal, the Blackhawks absolutely dominated possession, out shooting LA 40-22, and were responsible for about two-thirds of any shot attempt directed towards either net. The Kings never mounted anything resembling an offense and were lucky to not be the first shutout victim of the 2013-14 season for the Blackhawks tonight.

So I say it again… just what the hell happened exactly in the Air Canada Center on Saturday?

Among the topics covered are Corey Crawford’s injury in the Florida game and what it means going forward, goaltending contracts in general, the James Neal-Shawn Thornton mess in Pittsburgh and Boston plus some general talk about the East vs. the West stack-up so far. Enjoy! Hopefully next week we’ll be able to deliver on the surprise we mention in the first minute or so.

The More You Tighten Your Grip: Wild 4 – Blackhawks 3

Things I’d rather not see again this year: 3 defencemen on the ice at the same time (photo credit to NHL.com’s Bruce Kluckohn)

This was a hell of a hockey game. The Wild came out of the gates firing as Matt Cooke dented the twine not even five minutes into the contest on a goal from the slot. Torrey Mitchell’s pass was from behind the goal line in the corner and Cooke put it home. After that it wasn’t until a Wild powerplay late in the 2nd period that the scoreboard operator had to make a move. For the better part of the first 40 minutes, the play was even. Both teams traded chances and Quenneville relied heavily on his top line and pairing.

Déjà Vu and We’re Through with You: Blackhawks 3 – Flames 2

Thankful for ToewsFace

Not sure I want to get used to having to come back against the Flames but it certainly is better to be on this side of the equation having been on the other far more recently when it comes to Chicago sports. A late third period goal to tie it and this time overtime wasn’t even necessary. Calgary was content finishing their meltdown in regulation. I’ll go ahead and join the chorus in saying that today, I am thankful for the Patricks.

Blackhawks Community Ratings: CHI @ StL (10.9.13)

Mmmmmmmmm, pie.

I’m going to give an abbreviated breakdown of the community responses and their respective stats today. I’ll be grouping player by line or defensive pairing and then giving the aggregate rankings for each player while listing the line’s total stats instead of individuals. Again, thanks to everyone that has been participating. We’re going to try and keep on the ball with these, but the spread out nature of the schedule has made it a little difficult, and participation went down from the first time we did it so there’s not as much data to draw from. Again, all advanced stats are pulled from the Extra Skater advanced box, the standard stats from the NHL.com box and shift charts are now available and the sparkly new shiftchart.com.

Blackhawks 2 – Lightning 3: Play 60

Our first Toews Face of the new campaign

Apologies for the late and likely abbreviated recap, but as much as I love hockey there were just way too many compelling things going on in the world of sports this evening for me to focus on the Hawks and Bolts tonight (jNWU not closing vs OSU, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander dueling… also about 7 delicious pumpkin beers etc.). Anyways, let’s get to the hockey game from West Madison Street tonight.

Community Ratings Results: Blackhawks vs. Capitals (10.1.13)

Stick Tap to all of you

First of all, the whole staff here at CtA would like to thank everyone who participated in the Community Rankings. We really value your input and think this should be, at the very least, an interesting feature going forward. We’ll not only compile the results for this post, but we can also revisit them when we do previews for opponents later in the season.  I’m also personally compiling a spreadsheet of the stats, both advanced and standard, for each player from each game. While I’m still not sure exactly what I’m going to do with those, I’ve got a few ideas rolling around in my head.

All the stats below the players are derived from the NHL.com box score and ExtraSkater.com’s advanced box. If you would like more information on the advanced stats, I encourage you to visit ExtraSkater’s glossary or Arctic Ice Hockey. Right, let’s get to the results.

Blackhawks vs. Capitals: Raise Your Glasses We’re Raising a Banner

For me, it doesn’t get much better than those Caps throwback sweaters

Puck Drop: 7:05 p.m. CST (with the banner, folks are saying 7:28 p.m.)

Where You Can Find It: NBC Sports Network (174 on Comcast, DirecTV 220, 1640 AT&T U-Verse)

Beat Writers & Bloggers for the Opposition: @kcarrera, @WashTimesMike, @russianmachine, @JapersRink

If Time on Ice gets itself together, I’ll post the CORSI/Fenwick link at game time.

You made it! We ALL made it!

With the lockout extending last season late into the summer our wait wasn’t quite as long this summer as previously, but I’m just as ready as the rest of you for hockey season to begin. Tonight on West Madison Street the Chicago Blackhawks will put 2013′s abbreviated campaign behind them by raising four new banners to the rafters before taking on the Washington Capitals. It’ll be a sweet taste of euphoria that reminds us just how high the highs can be in the NHL, but as I’m sure the players will relay to each other, that feeling must be short lived in order to focus on the task at hand. That task, being the 2013-14 NHL season.
